Welcome to the website of the walking artists network. It’s for everyone who defines themselves as a walking artist, and everyone who is interested in walking as a mode of art practice, as well as related fields including, but not limited to, architecture, archaeology, anthropology, cultural geography, history, spatial design, urban design and planning.

Events and news are in the blog area below this text, the pages to the left have more information about the network’s background and development – as well as a list of members. We also have a jisc-mail discussion list which you can subscribe to here: www.jiscmail.ac.uk/wan

Walkie-talkie by Mark Hunter

A big thank you to everyone who came down to Chelsea Theatre on Saturday for the Walkie-talkie mobile symposium. Nearly fifty people turned up to to take ideas for a walk and were rewarded with a beautiful summer’s day in which to ‘get outside’. It was really heartening for all of us to meet and see the committment to the network, with people coming from all over the UK; the award for furthest distance travelled goes to Dee Heddon (Glasgow!) We’re working on procuring enough space on the website (www.walkingartistsnetwork.org) to put up the array of documentation created over the day – much of which is still in our cameras, MP3 recorders, etc.

Looking forward to seeing some ‘walkie-talkie’ inspired posts and discussion – both on this site and the JISCmail.

After Andrew Stuck posted the Sideways Festival’s call for projects on the JISCmail, we thought we would get in touch with them on behalf of WAN. I am now please to say that Clare Q and I will be visiting Belgium next week and spending Tuesday with festival organiser Andy Vandevyvere. We are visiting both Trage Wegen (where Andy works) and the Verbeke Foundation (one of the other partners). It seems we are all equally excitied about the prospect of a collaboration between WAN and Sideways, so watch this space!

Looking forward to seeing many of you at Chelsea Theatre on Saturday 30th July – I’ll post more about that later today.

walkie-talkie invites people to come together for a one-day mobile symposium, using Chelsea Theatre as ‘base camp’. A day of scratch walks and peripatetic perambulations, walkie-talkie is the first walking event of the Walking Artists Network, established in order to aid/enable/force artists who use walking in their practice to come together and think and talk and walk.

The day looks something like this:

10am – coffee and registration

10.15 – 11am introduction and open forum discussion – defining themes to take for a walk

11am – 12.30 walk and talk

12.30 – 1pm regroup/report/discuss/document

1pm – 1.30pm lunch

1.30pm – 2pm open forum discussion – defining themes to take for a walk

2pm – 3.30pm walk and talk

3.30pm – 4pm regroup/report/discuss/document

4.30pm close/drinks

It’s free, but booking is required via the Chelsea Theatre website: https://kiosk.iristickets.co.uk/k?prchelsea

All are welcome, whatever your interest in walking and/or art, the only pre-defined aspect of the day is the schedule above – we need you to bring the content.

Participants are welcome to drop in and out throughout the day, though we do suggest taking part in one of the open forum discussions (either at 10.15am or at 1.30pm).

Also going on in/around/from the theatre:

Gustavo Ciriaco & Andrea Sonnberger : Here Whilst We Walk

Amy Sharrocks : Lost and Found

Manuel Vason : Workshop

Ragroof Theatre : Tea Dance

more info. about these at: http://www.chelseatheatre.org.uk/index.php?pid=140

Hope to see you there!

A small number of travel bursaries (of up to £50) are available on a
first-come first-served basis, please email c.qualmann@uel.ac.uk if you'd
like one.
